Square Yard / Gaj

Widely used for residential plots in Delhi, UP, Haryana and Rajasthan. "Gaj" is the everyday term for a square yard.

Carpet area is the net usable floor area inside your apartment's walls. Built-up area adds the thickness of internal and external walls and, in some cases, balconies. Super (or super built-up) area also includes a proportionate share of common areas such as lobbies, lifts and staircases. Under RERA, apartments must be sold on the basis of carpet area — always ask for all three figures before you book.
Bigha is a traditional unit that was never standardised nationally. Its size varies by state and often by district — for example, about 14,400 sq.ft in West Bengal and 27,225 sq.ft for a pakka Bigha in Rajasthan, while values around 2,500–3,000 sq.ft are common in parts of UP and NCR. Always confirm the local definition with revenue records before relying on a conversion.
